Catherine Ford is a British actress who was born in Bloomsbury. When her father's divorce from her family, she was raised up by her mother, grandparents, and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young teenager. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate also regularly worked in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. But Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
